UNAPPROVED TREATMENT CLAIMS
WHY THIS MATTERS (Pinkeye example): OTC eye drops which claim to treat certain medical conditions such as "pinkeye" may lead to harm if a consumer purchases the eye drop believing it will treat the problem. For example, many forms of pinkeye are due to infection by a bacteria or a virus. An OTC eye drop will not kill bacteria or viruses. Also, in some cases pinkeye is due to a serious infection such as shingles, or it might be a complication from wearing contact lenses. Using an OTC eye drop that is falsely marketed as treating pinkeye may cause a delay in seeking treatment from an eye care provider, leading to permanent vision damage.
